What is it about cedarwood that is so beneficial?

.

Cedarwood comes from several different trees known as Cedars that grow in different parts of the world, and may have different uses.

The products we currently stock come from the Eastern Red Cedar.  This tree is native to Eastern North America from Southeastern Canada to the Gulf of Mexico and east of the Great Plains. The Eastern Red Cedar or Juniperus virginiana is in fact a species of Juniper rather than a true cedar. It is an especially long lived tree with the potential to live up to 900 years.

.

The Cedar trees grow in North America where the weather is damp, and trees are subjected to destructive conditions as a result of fungus, microorganisms, and insects. It is because of these conditions that the Cedar tree has developed self-protective qualities.

Cedar Trees Growing Together

These self-protective qualities make Cedar Wood a very good home building material.

.

As Cedar wood isn’t affected by the weather, humidity or temperature, it doesn’t loose it’s shape like many other types of wood can. Cedar wood will stay straight and flat when other woods can be warped by the weather.

Cedar wood is very light and porous. The porous wood can allow it to absorb noise which is another benefit in using it as a home building material.

.

The learned self-protective behaviour of the Cedar tree means that it stands up to moisture, it will resist rot and it resists insect damage better than other woods.

.

The Cedar wood can be distilled to extract the cedarwood oil. Cedarwood Essential Oil is extracted through the process of steam distillation from the wood pieces of the Cedar Wood tree.

.

Cedar wood oil was used as a base for paint by the ancient Sumerians, no doubt for it’s self protective qualities.

Cedar wood oil was even used in one of three methods of the embalming process in ancient Egypt!

.

Nowadays cedarwood essential oil is frequently used for its aromatic properties in aromatherapy. These are just a few of the benefits that have been attributed to cedar wood essential oil:

.

  • Antiseborrhoeic
  • Antiseptic
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Antispasmodic
  • Tonic
  • Astringent
  • Diuretic
  • Emmenagogue
  • Expectorant
  • Insecticide
  • Fungicide

.

As if that wasn't enough cedar wood oil has also been linked with curing acne, arthritis, bronchitis, cystitis, dandruff, dermatitis, stress, kidney disorders and as a treatment against oily skin.

.

With all these benefits it can surely be said that Cedar wood is a tough wood!
