Wasp Nest Blog

Is there a noticeable amount of wasps flying about your home and garden this year? It could be that a colony of wasps has built a nest nearby and is happily sharing your living area with you.

Wasp stings are very common and although they can be very painful a single wasp sting is not usually harmful unless you take an allergic reaction. Reactions to wasp stings generally result in redness and swelling but they can also lead to nausea, vomiting and in worst case scenarios, Anaphylaxis. Most people would rather avoid taking a chance of getting close to a wasp but being faced with a swarm of wasps makes for an entirely different situation.

Wasps like to settle and build their nests in sheltered areas, somewhere that provides a quick and easy route in and out. This ranges from sheds to attic spaces, wall cavities to bird boxes. A high amount of traffic from these type of places would generally suggest there is a nest in the vicinity.

Wasps start building their nests in the spring when the queen wasp has woken from her winter hibernation. The nest will become active when the weather starts to warm up and throughout the summer the nest will grow bigger and busier as eggs are laid and new workers appear.

The Rentokil Wasp Nest Killer Powder is simply poured at the entrance to the wasp nest, where they fly in and out. The powder contains Permethrin. It works in 24 hours killing all the wasps in the nest.

Zero In also have a powder called Zero In Wasp Killer Nest Control Powder. This works in the same way as the Rentokil powder and they suggest you use it late at night or early morning when the wasps are less active

We also stock a foam by Rentokil called Rentokil Wasp Nest Destroyer Foam. You simply spray the nest from a distance of 2 metres and the wasps begin to die. A small nest will be gone within 24 hours. Though a larger nest may need a second spray. One can is large enough to treat 3 large nests.
