Lean-To Greenhouse Blog Header

When choosing your Greenhouse you will be met with many different options to choose from.

The first place to start will be are you going to go for a free-standing greenhouse or a lean-to greenhouse?

A free-standing greenhouse is likely the type of greenhouse we are more familiar with; the stand alone green house that stands at the bottom of the garden like a little glass house.

A Lean-To Greenhouse is as it’s name sounds, a Greenhouse that leans up against something. Also known as a Wall-Mounted Greenhouse, a Lean-To Greenhouse is built against an existing building wall. Generally, the greenhouse is attached to the side of a house.

Benefits of a Lean-To Greenhouse

  • A Lean-To / Wall-Mounted Greenhouse can be a lot easier to put together. It has less pieces to put together compared to that of a free-standing greenhouse. It has the additional support of a concrete wall to mount the greenhouse against.
  • If the Lean-To / Wall-Mounted Greenhouse is positioned against the wall of your home, access to the greenhouse is a lot easier and more convenient. There will be no traipsing to the bottom of the garden to get your fresh herbs and veg, but simply step outside the door of your home.
  • The additional wall from your home can also help in bringing some additional warmth to your greenhouse. The heat from your home can emanate into the glass structure, where a free-standing glass house would have no shelter from the elements.

Disadvantages of a Lean-To Greenhouse

  • Sunlight must be considered when constructing your greenhouse. A Free-Standing greenhouse has the benefits of being a complete glasshouse. The addition of a concrete wall to a Lean-To Greenhouse removes some of the access from the sun and so it is imperative that the positioning of the greenhouse examined before installing your Lean-To Greenhouse. Plants will need the sunlight to survive.
  • Having the greenhouse close to your home is a great benefit in many ways; nipping out the door to the greenhouse for some fresh herbs for the salad you have just thrown together sounds ideal. However, being in such close proximity to your home can mean that it requires a little more care and attention. Insects and pests are something to consider in all greenhouses, be they free-standing or lean-to’s. Plants and greenery will attract insects so insecticides are a part of greenhouse gardening. The thoughts of them being closer to your home may mean for a keener eye to be taken on insect prevention.
