SMALL SPACES made easy! Are you feeling left behind by the "grow-your-own" revolution because you live in a gardenless apartment or have a postage-stamp-sized patio? Don't worry: Anyone with a sunny windowsill, patio, or balcony can cultivate home-grown vegetables. In fact, choosing plants that are nutritious, delicious, and attractive is the ultimate way to maximise limited space. We've tried and tested these varieties suitable for small spaces and know they'll succeed, but that's not to say there aren't other vegetable seeds that you could try!
Growing Information
Easy to grow indoors all year round. Sow seed thinly over a seed tray of fine damp compost. Place on a well lit windowsill but avoid strong sunlight. Maintain moisture levels and harvest with scissors when the seedlings are approximately 4cm (1½”) high. (1-3 weeks maturity).
Sowing Information
Choose a small seed tray or clean, empty margarine tub (having made drainage holes in the base). Pour in some seed compost and level to around 1cm ( 1?2") depth. Water, and when drained, scatter some seed evenly across the surface. (Save surplus seed for a second sowing). Place on a well lit windowsill but avoid strong sunlight. Maintain moisture levels and harvest with scissors when the seedlings are approx. 4cm (1 1?2") high. You can store your 'salad' in a polythene bag in the fridge for a few days if required. Sowing ➞ Cropping: 1-3 weeks.
